February 2010
Yay! Today I weigh less than 100kg for the first time for 6 years. Never going back over that watershed again.

One of the people I met in São Paulo last week introduced himself as “a former militant Trotskyite”. He was a fascinating and lovely guy.
Just found out that a lot of people use their email as a store for bookmarks. Mind: blown.

Listening to Ligeti’s Atmosphères to try to detect the “folk music” content that a commenter on my blog says is the similarity with Kodály
Ligeti report: I found not a trace of folk music in Atmosphères. Still mystified.

Just got an email from SourceForge. It’s the source code equivalent of a mail from Friends Reunited. Ah, the memories.
The Leeds “fan” in question told me to “fuck off back to pasta-land, you wop cunt”. Which was nice.

I thought I couldn’t hate Leeds United any more than I already did. And then Ken Bates got involved.
Fun fact: the only time I’ve ever been racially abused (they thought, wrongly, that I was Italian) was at Elland Road.
As far as I’m concerned, Leeds United FC is just one massive, crusty, fetid wankstain on the already filth-ridden sheets of football.

In last night’s dream I was trying to explain Objective-C’s method swizzling to @simonianson and @bobbyc, which explains why I’m knackered.
Also, fact fans, Barenboim said he was going to play “a Strauss waltz” but in fact played Unter Donner und Blitz, which is a polka.
Barenboim playing Strauss after Schoenberg last night was like serving sashimi with a chocolate sauce.

Grumpy
I’ve rarely been more irritated by a concert than this one. Barenboim is a cult of personality. Schoenberg then a Strauss waltz? Fuck that.
Next up is some kind of “talk” about the Schoenberg. This would work if it were Lenny on the podium; I’m less optimistic about Barenboim.
Seriously, what reason could there be for “conducting” from the piano than monumental self regard?
Barenboim’s Beethoven is as if filtered through Grieg. Full of intolerable mannerism.
I am staggered at the number of people praising The Hurt Locker. It struck me as completely conventional. Maverick bomb disposal! Cool!
Not surprised that the Hurt Locker has Oscar nominations. They do like to reward predictable, mediocre crap, after all. /via @shanerichmond
At the RFH for the last of Barenboim’s Beethoven Piano Concertos cycle. I’m really here for Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra though.
Classical types: I only have one recording of Schoenberg’s 5 Orchestral Pieces (Levine). What other versions would you recommend?
A *stunningly* beautiful travelogue with moonrise photos from @craigmod - one of the most lovely things I’ve seen on the web for a while

It turns out that @simonianson was the winner in the iPad predictions by 1 point from me. Nice work.
Typos in my post corrected thanks to the efforts of @saradotdub, @mikelaurie and @elinesca. We’re crowdsourcing grammar and spelling.
Listening to Pollino play the Well-tempered Klavier. In places his breathing is louder than the music.
That would be Pollini, obviously.
